New Translation of the Old Testament – How to Read the OT

I highlight some of my favorite passages of  John Goldingay’s new translation of the Old Testament called The First Testament.

Also, I discus a recent article in Relevant Magazine where Andy Stanley says,

“Participants in the new covenant (that’s Christians) are not required to obey any of the commandments found in the first part of their Bibles. Participants in the new covenant are expected to obey the single command Jesus issued as part of his new covenant: as I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

  1. video and audio not synced. low volume on your end.
I have read the articles by mr. Stanley and many responses both for and against his belief toward the old testament. below is my condensed take on the issue.

now we live by faith and God’s grace. if we try to keep one law of the old test. we are guilty of all. James 2:10  For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
that is why Christ came to fulfill the law and prophets. matt. 5:17. as Paul says in Gal. chap. 3 there comes a time when …”faith is come we are no longer under a schoolmaster.” (vs. 25), schoolmaster= old testament. as he says in verse 29-And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.  so our faith goes back to Abraham and the promises that God made to him. not the law. this is the whole premise of Galatians chap. 3.

    thanks for the vlog.

    1. Hey dad, thanks for the feedback on the video. I will do something different next time. I agree with you that we are no longer held by the law. However, many are using this argument to do away with the OT altogether, and I think that is a problem. We need the OT to helps us understand the context in which Jesus and his disciples lived and wrote. How else are we to know sin unless we have the law?

      1. right!
we can’t discern the new covenant changes without knowing what is in the old covenant.

Gal 3:24  Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
